2019 Summary

Mr. Blue Skies broke early and bright for The Jones Cup for 2019 as the largest field in history took the field. Thirty plus players teed off on the Heathland course to practice for the upcoming tournament. Defending champ Steven Widener was not among the field as he practiced off site before making a dramatic appearance before the first round. For the first time, Oyster Bay was not the site of the practice round. That means players would play Heathland on Thursday and the first round on Friday.

Round One - Heathland

Players got a good look at Heathland on Thursday and the first round results showed it. The Johnson boys got off to a great start with Dad Jim Johnson shooting the low round of 76 and 66 points. Son Jimmy Johnson opened with 81 and 58 points. Other leading scores were recorded by Jeff Carowan, rookie Justin May, veterans Chris Kelley and Bill Titsworth. Other fine rounds included Frank Hughes with 82, Rich Crim and Dad Jim Johnson tied for “Most Pars” at 11. Founder Dan Rath scored a fine 85. Also lurking on the first page leader board were Barry Kelley, Bruce Bryan and Tom Spellman. Play for The Jones Cup was tied at +13 by Son Jimmy Johnson and the vulnerable Jeff Carowan.

Round Two - Moorland

The second round of The Jones Cup is traditionally played on the always difficult Moorland course. This year the weather was beautiful for Moorland with bright skies and light winds. However, the quick, sloping greens took their toll. The shot of the day was recorded by rookie Kevin Rumsey with an eagle on the very difficult par 4 18th hole. It was an impossible shot to an uphill and blind hole location. The patrons were beside themselves in disbelief and pitch coins in to the divot in memory of a shot for the ages. The Legends management may set a bronze plague to commemorate the heroic shot.

It was Tom Spellman with the round of the day as he took lead for The Jones Cup at +10. A great round was turned by Dale Mathis - last year’s winner of the “Shirt off his Back” award. Gordon Lovett, Jeff Widener, and Brent Nifong all scored in positive territory. Crowd favorites, little Tommy Woods and big Robbie Cheek score well, along with KC Rankin, Chris Kelley, Son Jimmy Johnson.

At the end on two rounds, Tom Spellman and Son Jimmy Johnson were tied for The Jones Cup at +16. The team of Tom Spellman and Kevin (the Eagle) Rumsey were tied up with the Johnson boys at +19. The chase was on as Chris Kelley, Gordon Lovett and big Robbie Cheek nipped at the heels of leaders.

Who would succumb to the pressure? Who would sleep well with the lead? Who would break through as a first time winner of… wait for it – The Jones Cup?

Final Round - Parkland

The Parkland course is always long and difficult and this day was cart path only adding to the difficulty. However, Brent Nifong continued his great play on the Parkland course on a cool day scoring a stellar 40 points. Dad Jim Johnson turned a brilliant 84 while rookie Bruce Bryan and Rich Crim scored in plus territory. Again Tom Spellman continued solid play. Chris Kelley and KC Rankin challenged as Son Jimmy Johnson fell back. In the end it was Tom Spellman cruising to a 6 point win with Chris Kelley second and Brent Nifong third.

Mr. Blue Skies fell on Tom Spellman as the champion golfer of the year and winner of The Jones Cup.
