2014 Jones Cup

2014 Summary

Weather was the story of the 3rd annual playing of The Jones Cup - and about 230 Canadians!

Thursday - The Heritage

Thursday's practice round turned into a game of patience when we were greeted by a 3 hour frost delay at The Heritage. Seems like all of Pawley's Island is a low lying area and with little wind the night before, the frost set in early and stayed late. The Jones Cuppers were lucky to get in 9 holes of practice before the tournament action began on Friday.

Friday - Parkland

Friday broke clear and n i c e - great for tournament play! However... 230 Canadians had tee times before our time at 12:28 PM. We now have empirical evidence that Canadian geese are much faster than Canadian golfers and that they damage the same amount of grass. With play at a crawl, the grass getting thin and the sun setting, play was halted with only 14 holes to show for the competition. The tournament committee was in conference with a couple of burgers and beers before devising a scoring method which will become part of The Jones Cup legacy and will not be explained here to protect the innocent.

First Round leaders were:

John Tallant +10
Frank "The Don" Bochicchio +2
Freddy T +2
Mark Davis +2
Jo-Joe White +2

Saturday - Heathland

Saturday was moving day with all competitors grinding for the championship. With a firm lead on the field, John Tallant was in the driver seat - and drive it he did. John was suffering from a severe pain in the butt and was allowed to play the forward tees along with Jo-Joe White. Johnny T used his superior driving and sharp putting to be a severe pain in the butt to rest of the field. Mark Davis turned in a brilliant round to go to +8. Frank "The Don" blizted helpless Heathland to finish at +10. Jo-Joe White continued his excellent play to post +9. However, Brent Koval played a smart round to break 80 and post +11. Other notable rounds belong to former champ Jim Johnson with 76, defending champ Gene Riddle at 81 and Rich at 82. Andy Carrowan made tournament history by turning in the lowest round ever at 71 and an amazing total of 77 points! Congratulations to all these fine players. But... It wasn't enough as Big John Tallant came in with a solid round of 84 with 48 points to hold the lead to the finish at +15. With Sunday looking like a wash out, Big Johnny T was the leader in the clubhouse.

Sunday - Moorland

A prediction of heavy rain and thunderstorms made Sunday a big question mark. Forecasts called for 50% chance of rain at 10AM and the final round of the tournament was to start at 8:48AM. However, the weather experts missed it again as the rain started pelting the evil Moorland course at 3AM! Thunder, lightening and tornadoes were predicted for late morning and afternoon so the committee called play to a halt early Sunday morning.

John Tallant was crowned the 2014 champ and accepted The Jones Cup in a riot of silence. Johnny T played excellent golf while suffering gnawing pain, but he battled the conditions and kept going, driving, putting and limping his way to victory. While Sunday's play was called off, we're told that Johnny T secretly crept into the night before Sunday's round to buy a new rain jacket! Yes - the new champ was prepared to battle wind, rain, thunder, lightening and storm to the winner's circle.

Congratulations to John Tallant!
