2018 Summary

Congratulations to Steven Widener - Champion of the 2018 Jones Cup!

Former champion Mark Hunter was second, while Brent Nifong, Jeff Carowan and Frank Hughes finished third, fourth and fifth. Congratulations to Mark, Brent, Jeff and Frank on the excellent play.

The Jones Cup began it's 7th year with a practice round at Oyster Bay Golf Club in Sunset Beach, NC. An extra night at The Legends made an early start at OB more comfortable. Nary a gator was seen in the low country and the weather was great. The Boundary House in Calabash provided good times and good food after the round. David Bender enjoyed a glass wine with 4 straws. David was quoted saying the "wine was flavorful with just a hint of polyethylene terephthalate."

This year, we welcomed back former champion Gene "The Riddler" Riddle after an extended absense. Newcomers this year included Mike Maher, Josh Frahm and Brent Nifong.

Heathland

Fine weather set the scene on the Heathland course. Great rounds were recorded by Mike Maher, Mark Hunter, Steven Widener, Efrin, De la Luz, Frank Hughes and David Bender. Andy Carowan, Josh Frahm, and Steven scored in the low seventies, while Efrin and Frank broke 80. Steven Widener set the pace with +17 points. This was after the committee adjusted his handicap by a record amount. (NOTE: scoring data has only been kept since 2012.) Mr. Widener had not been known to score this well in previous years. In fact, Steven was as much as 20 shots higher just two years ago. Maybe a recent coaching change was the difference; however, Steven's partner, Robbie Cheek, wasn't listening. Mathis and Hughes took the team lead by two points over Widener and Cheek and Rath and De al Luz.

Moorland

Always a grind, the Moorland course sent scores climbing. The only one falling was Robbie Cheek. Robbie decided to take dive before play began and was placed on Injured Reserve (IR) for the rest tournament. Mark Hunter, Steven Widener, Dan Rath, Brent Nifong and Gordon Lovette played excellent rounds. Again, Steven Widener turned in a great round of 75, followed by Josh Frahm at 79. With rain approaching, Boston Bob did his best to hurry the field at the turn. It wasn't to be as the last few holes were played in the rain. A few clubs went flying as gloves became slick. There were no injuries. The team competiion was lead by Mathis and Hughes with both players in positive territory on the day. Rath and De la Luz were hanging tough in second. One point separated Widener and the injuried Cheek from the Carowan and Carowan team.

Parkland

A cold rain refused to yeild as the third round got underway. After 7 or 8 holes, water collected on the greens. The grounds crew did little to keep the competition going and the committee called suspended play after nine. The tournament ended when rain checks appeared for all players.
