2016 Jones Cup

2016 Summary

The 5th annual invitational started with a practice round at Oyster Bay. OB offered a shorter drive for many and delivered a beautiful day to start the annual pilgrimage south. Clear skies and mild temps brought out the shorts and sights of gators all round. It was just too much Carolina Blue.

Heathland

Once again, weather played a crucial role in The Jones Cup. This year the warm, clear skies brought excellent scoring conditions. Tom Doss led all players with a wonderful 75. Newcomer Dale Harriman finsihed with a 77. Another rookie, Mike Tallant, carded a fine round with 81. Rich Crim, fresh off the surgeon's table and perennial favorite Gordon Lovett scored 84s. But it was Mike Tallant with the lead after the 1st round with a dramatic score of +18. The team of Billy T and defending champ Mark Hunter opened the team competition at +22 with Jo-Joe White and Dale Harriman not far behind.

Moorland

Excellent scoring conditions continued on Saturday as the Cuppers took on Hell's Half Acre and the rest of the devilish Moorland course. Scores were higher for most of the field except for Hammer'n Frank Hughes. Frank hammered the driver and played with abandon to score a wild 75. Frank took over the lead at +34; however, his eyes wandered as he withdrew from the competition. Rumors started immediately that Frank had taken up with a troupe of dancing girls and followed them to his home in High Point. David Geary made a move early with a fine 87 for the day. Doss, Harriman and M. Tallant all pulled back a bit while Bill Titsworth and RW McDowell upped the ante to +24 at the top of the field.

The team competition drew tight with Frank Hughes' brilliant round. Teamed with veteran Dale Mathis, the Frank and Dale team scored a +32. However, Billy T and Mark Hunter retained the lead at +39.

Parkland

Final round conditions at Parkland were cool and breezy, but offered great scoring opportunities. The Tallant brothers, Bill Titsworth, Dale Harriman, Steve Widener, and Big Al VanNoy enjoyed solid rounds. Jo-Joe White, RW, David and Gordon had steady rounds to push the leaders. In the end it was Mike Tallant with 52 points on the day to take The Jones Cup. Billy T was just 2 points back with David Geary in 3rd and RW at No. 4.

Billy T and Mark Hunter won the team competition at +38. Jo-Joe White and Dale were 2nd with +32.
