2015 Jones Cup

2015 Summary

The 4th playing of The Jones Cup got off to a shakey start with a practice round at The Heritage. A stormy cold front threatened play on the drive down and play began with shower. Undaunted, the cuppers teed it up anyway. Within a few holes the sky began to clear and playable weather arrived.

Friday - Oyster Bay

Oyster Bay in Sunset Beach, NC hosted the first round on Friday. Clear skies and mild temps were welcomed with hairy legs sported by many players. However, very wet fairways kept the carts on the path all day. In fact, carts on the path would play a factor for the reminder of the tournament. The 15th hole (6th hold of the day's play) added danger to competition. The island par3 played about 90 yards to a pin on the front of the green. However, a 9ft. alligator decided to take a sun bath on the front of the green. Rumor has that the gator was named "Gabby", but she remained quite as players tipped-toed around her. Surprising newcomer RW McDowell (Dub-yuh) took the lead at +9, followed by Jeffey C and Mark the Hunter at +5. B. Koval had a fine round at +4 and JP Poore scored well at +1.

Saturday - Moorland

More sun and great temps greeted the players Saturday and many wanted an extra nine on the infamous Moorland course. Deranged golf architect P. B. Dye designed Moorland with large expanses of natural growth, sand, water and waste areas and extraordinary undulations and bulkheads. The par 4 16th - Hell's Half Acre - challenged all players with a driveable green and enormous sand pitches. As linksters, we took our swings and took our chances - some survived and others are still missing. Mark the Hunter handled the trouble well with consistent driving using a 3 wood, having banned the driver, to take a commanding 10 point lead! Honorable mention goes to Andy Carowan for a remarkable round of 73 to gain 73 points to move into 3rd place. JJ Johnson played well to score 19 pars for the first two days. He was tied with Dandy-Andy at 19 apiece.

Sunday - Heathland

With overall tournament scoring down at Moorland, Heathland offered a day to get healthy. The links style course allowed players to score better, but wind and rain played a role in this final round. Once again, Cart Path Only and rain suits held scoring down. However, some were able to take advantage of Heathland. Again, Mark the Hunter found 5 pars and avoided trouble to turn in a solid round. Andy, JJ and Brent rose to the top of the field and the Hunter became the Hunted. Andy screwed in 10 pars on the day and JJ found pay dirt with 9 pars. Dale Mathis woke up to card 8 pars. Remarkable play for a wet and windy day. In the end the consistent play and solid scoring from Mark the Hunter closed out the tournament to win the 4th annual championship.

MOST PARS Award

This year marked the first annual award for MOST PARS. Tournament founder, Jim Jones, alway said he was never upset with PAR. Old man PAR is your friend and very hard to beat. The first annual award for MOST PARS goes to Andy Carowan - Congratulations to Andy!
